A worldwide increase in waterpipe consumption can be observed. The present systematic review aims to assess cytotoxic and genotoxic impacts on oral health related to waterpipe smoking. We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Dimensions evaluating if waterpipe smokers (P) have any cytotoxic or genotoxic effects on oral cells (I) compared to non-smokers (C) regarding mouth neoplasms (O). PRISMA guidelines were adopted for the current systematic review. Review Manager was utilized for statistical analysis (p < 0.05). A risk of bias and summary were performed to assess the grade of the 20 included articles. With some of the articles included, a forest plot was created in different levels. Waterpipe smoking is harmful to oral health, causing cytotoxic and genotoxic effects on oral cells with a Risk Difference of 0.16. It causes a series of detrimental cellular and genetic modifications such as acanthosis, epithelial dysplasia, and hyperparakeratosis. Changes in DNA methylation and p53 expression were assessed among others. In addition, waterpipe has a bunch of carcinogenic compounds. Even with few publications on the subject, articles are very devastating in confirming the carcinogenicity of waterpipe smoking. Waterpipe smoke is cytotoxic and genotoxic. Due to the release of many organic compounds, it increases the incidence of oral cancer.Keywords: Mouth Neoplasms; Oral Health; Smoking Water Pipes; Tobacco Use; Toxicity Measure.

Waterpipe smoking is a form of tobacco use that causes nicotine/tobacco dependence and has become a global health problem. In this study, the association of rs16969968 SNP in the CHRNA5 gene with waterpipe dependence was investigated. A total of 386 men and women who used a waterpipe to smoke tobacco were recruited and divided into less dependent and more dependent smokers based on their score on the Lebanon Waterpipe Dependence Scale (LWDS). Results showed a significant difference in the distribution of GG, GA, and AA genotypes by waterpipe dependence status (p < .001). The more dependent group showed a higher frequency of the AA genotype than the less dependent smokers' group (38% vs. 23%, respectively). In addition, the more dependent smokers exhibited more A allele than less dependent smokers (53% vs. 37% respectively, p < .001). In conclusion, there is an association between the rs16969968 SNP and waterpipe dependence as assessed by the LWDS.

Background/Objectives. The holistic methodology in education has been widely appreciated and implicated in dental schools in the last decade. Our department of conservative dentistry decided to reform the educational model of teaching from a traditional requirement-based model to a hybrid model incorporating comprehensive care treatment. The aim of our study was to assess students’ confidence and perspectives regarding the benefits of a comprehensive model of teaching. Materials and Methods. A questionnaire was distributed at the end of the academic year 2018-2019 and designed to investigate students’ opinions on the benefits of the new model of teaching, as well as difficulties encountered and possible shortcomings. In addition, self-perceived confidence level was assessed for the purpose of comparing confidence during supervised tasks versus confidence during comprehensive patient care. Results. Complete responses were gathered from 127 students out of 202, giving a response rate of 63%. The majority of students believed that the comprehensive model of teaching allowed them to better address patients’ needs, gave higher satisfaction, positively influenced self-confidence, permitted greater exposure to clinical techniques, and enhanced reasoning and analytical skills. However, their confidence was still lower in comprehensive patient management when compared to supervised tasks. Conclusion. Our students showed an appreciation of the comprehensive care model. Self-learning and didactic skills were enhanced. It would, therefore, be beneficial to adapt this methodology to earlier years and other disciplines to enhance the effectiveness of education and achievement of learning outcomes.
