Changes in biodiversity and species associations along a latitudinal gradient

Abstract: Biodiversity is currently threatened at local, regional, and global scales, and identifying the species that are vulnerable to these changes is essential for conservation efforts. For example, the breadth of species' ranges may offer important clues to their susceptibility to loss, as widespread species may be more resistant to loss than species with a narrower range breadth. To determine the potential for shifts in community interactions along the latitudinal geographic ranges of species, we examined pair-wis… Show more

“…In contrast, areas to the east of it are considerably more sheltered, with the Northern Channel Islands oriented as a chain of four islands just offshore. This area marks a mixing of colder northern and warmer southern ocean currents and approximates a biogeographic dividing point for many coastal and marine organisms (Dawson 2001; Elsberry et al 2018). Terrestrial plant communities in and around Point Conception also harbor unique biodiversity.…”

“…Here, we draw on an archaeological survey, ethnohistoric data, and contemporary Chumash perspectives to document long-term patterns of coastal land use and settlement spanning at least 9,000 years near Kumqaq’, Point Conception, California (Figure 1). 1 Point Conception is a biogeographical boundary point for many coastal and marine species, it harbors unique biodiversity, and it has long been recognized as an area of conservation priority (Dawson 2001; Elsberry et al 2018). Until recently, the land surrounding Kumqaq’ was a private ranch for over a century, and the point itself was owned by the US government.…”

“…For example, the distribution of large-range species is likely to be affected by geographical constraints, whereas small-range species are more influenced by environmental factors (Fu et al 2006, Wu et al 2013b, Hu et al 2017. Additionally, small-range or endemic species are often rare when compared to large-range species and might therefore be more vulnerable to extinction (Elsberry et al 2018). Similarly, species having a tropical biogeographic affinity are more narrowly distributed while temperate species show a wider distributional range across elevation due to their higher environmental tolerance Feng 2015, Zhou et al 2019).…”
