Changes in in Vitro Methane Production and Fatty Acid Profiles in Response to Cakalang Fish Oil Supplementation

Abstract: This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of cakalang fish oil addition in ruminant feed on in vitro methane production and fatty acid profiles. This experiment consisted of four treatments which were R0 : feed composing of forage and concentrate at a ratio of 60% : 40% without cakalang fish oil (CFO) addition as control feed; R1: R0 added with CFO at 2.5%; R2: R0 added with CFO at 5%, and R3: R0 added with CFO at 7.5%. Fermentation with rumen fluid was done using the Hohenheim Gas Test (HGT); feed… Show more

“…Approximately 200 mg samples (DM basis) were weighed into 100 mL glass syringes (Fortuna, Labortechnik, Germany) and filled with 30 mL rumen buffer fluid. Approximately 10 mL of medium was collected after 48 h incubation to determine pH, NH 3 concentration and single chain fatty acids (SCFAs) (Sondakh et al, 2017). Based on the proportions of SCFAs, methane production was estimated using the following equation (Widiawati & Thalib, 2007): CH 4 (mM)= (0.5 × acetate concentration) + (0.5 × butyrate concentration) -(0.25 × propionate concentration)…”

“…After 48 h of incubation, 20 mL of rumen-buffer was collected from representative samples to measure pH, ammonia (mg%, Conway 1951), and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) (mM) [23]. Methane production was estimated on the basis of SCFAs using the following equation [24]: CH 4 (mM) = (0.5 × acetate concentration) + (0.5 × butyrate concentration) -(0.25 × propionate concentration)…”
