Changes in intraocular lens surface roughness during cataract surgery assessed by atomic force microscopy

Abstract: Standard application procedures of IOLs may alter the IOL surface. Increases in the surface roughness of IOLs may influence postoperative posterior capsule opacification. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the interfacial properties of IOLs.

“…This study looked into the changes in the surface characteristics of preloaded and nonpreloaded IOLs during folding and injection. 10,15 In this study, we found that these surface alterations still occur even with the concurrent use of OVD, and the higher magnification of SEM showed that these alterations represent an actual damage to the optical surface of the lens. In another study, it was found that these scratches happen with the use of forceps for folding, and they reported absence of these scratches if OVD was used during manipulation.…”

“…Furthermore, it was found that hydrophobic acrylic and silicone IOLs had relatively low mean surface roughness values compared with PMMA [10]. Strauss et al [9] also studied the influence of IOL injection through the lens cartridge on the surface roughness of hydrophobic acrylic IOLs. They found that passing these lenses through the injection system had a significant influence on their surface integrity.…”

“…Je nach Konfiguration des Injektors kann es zum Einklemmen der Haptik oder Kratzern auf der Optik kommen [8]. Außerdem konnte in der Vergangenheit eine Erhöhung der Rauheit der IOL-Oberfläche nach Verwendung des Injektors nachgewiesen werden [9].…”
