Changes in latent fingermark glyceride composition as a function of sample age using UPLC-IMS-QToF-MSE

Abstract: An untargeted, lipidomics-based UPLC-IMS-QToF-MSE method was used to monitor the formation of triglyceride oxidation products, including ozonides, in latent fingermarks over time.

“…This result is consistent with our previous study on triolein (a triglyceride derived from glycerol and oleic acids) that SOZs are the major condensed-phase products after ozone oxidation in a flow tube reactor . Thanks to their high thermal stability, triglyceride-based SOZ compounds collected on indoor surfaces could be potential tracers in fingerprint age estimation. However, this future application is confronted with two major challenges. First, the SOZ formation is variable, depending on the ambient conditions.…”

“…Despite the wide applications of oil-based SOZs for skin treatments, a recent review by Leon et al points out the need for further evaluation of their dermatological risks . In an indoor environment, the reactive skin lipids constitute a major ozone sink. ,,, The kinetic model developed in this study predicts accurately the SOZ yields under typical indoor conditions, and it can be potentially used in predicting the age of fingerprints in future forensic applications. Apart from SOZs accumulating on the surface, oxidized skin lipids also release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like nonanal, , especially at elevated RHs. , Acute exposure to these air pollutants intensifies respiratory health risks. , …”

“…Results of this study have shown that decontaminants that used oxidizing agents, mainly chlorine based ones, as active principle have a high impact on fingermarks. Chemically speaking, hypochlorite (ClO − ) ions present in a solution may induce the oxidation of amino acids, peptides, and proteins as well as of unsaturated lipids [9,14].…”

“…It also depends on the composition of the existing fingermark. Although complex and variable, the natural composition of fingermarks includes amino acids, proteins and substances from sebum, such as fatty acids, glycerides, wax esters, squalene, sterols and sterol esters [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Since fingermarks are often latent, various development techniques can be used to enhance the contrast between the trace and its substrate.…”
