Changes in plasma albumin levels in early detection of infectious complications after laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery with ERAS protocol

Abstract: Background Combination of laparoscopic approach with ERAS protocol in colorectal surgery allows for an early discharge. However there is a risk that some of the discharged patients are developing, asymptomatic at the time, infectious complications. This may lead to a delay in diagnostics and proper treatment introduction. We aimed to assess the usefulness of preoperative plasma albumin concentration and their changes as indicators of infectious complications in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery. Me… Show more

“…This meta-analysis demonstrated that CRP of POD 1, 3/4 and 7 in the ERAS group was lower than in the control group, and there was a significant decrease for IL-6 of POD 1 and 4 compared with the control group. Albumin is a nutritional marker, responding immediately to surgical stress 44. This study result revealed that the ERAS group had higher albumin serum level than the control group on POD 4 and 7.…”

“…Preoperative malnutrition status has been identified as another potential risk factor and prognostic predictor for poor outcomes following hip fracture surgery. 13 Serum albumin level is the conventional indicator used as a biomarker of malnutrition, and patients are considered to have poor nutritional status when their serum albumin level is <35 g/L, 14 Several previous studies have indicated that preoperative serum albumin indicates susceptibility to the development of postoperative complications in patients with malignancies, including periampullary tumours, 15 colorectal cancer, 16 and lung cancer. 17 Likewise, in noncancer patients, the relationships between hypoalbuminaemia and poor postoperative outcomes have been studied.…”

“…Low hemoglobin levels are associated with weakened immunity and may aggravate an infection (Bishlawy 1999;Hassan et al 2016). Albumin is an acute phase reactant that can be decreased in infections (Wierdak et al 2018). The association of albumin with the nutritional status is controversial and apparently varies among patient populations (Fuhrman et al 2004;Kuzuya et al 2007;Baron et al 2010;Gama-Axelsson et al 2012;Fruchtenicht et al 2015;Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 2016;Bharadwaj et al 2016;Marcason 2017).…”
