Changes in registered malaria cases and deaths in Togo from 2008 to 2017

Abstract: The WHO Malaria Report 2019 stated that "globally, the burden of malaria was lower than ten years ago, but, in the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of malaria cases around the world". This study reported changes in malaria cases and deaths at the Togo national level (2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017) and presented anti-malaria fight results and eradication chances by 2030 in Togo. “…Furthermore, this analysis reported an increase in confirmed malaria cases over time in most health districts and target groups. This result is consistent with two studies carried out in Togo, probably due to better registration of malaria cases and the deployment of community health workers (CHWs) at national level along time through increased international financial and technical resources [ 14 , 15 ]. CHWs were trained to use RDTs to diagnose malaria in the communities and to treat confirmed malaria cases.…”

“…CHWs were trained to use RDTs to diagnose malaria in the communities and to treat confirmed malaria cases. Widespread deployment of CHWs led to better diagnosis of malaria cases and therefore an increase in registered cases [ 15 ]. Another time series analysis conducted in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2005 and 2014 showed an increase in confirmed malaria cases associated with the introduction of RDTs [ 24 ].…”

“…However, malaria epidemiology is poorly understood in Togo, with a paucity of information on species of Plasmodium that are responsible for disease transmission. Studies on disease burden erroneously made believe that malaria cases are only related to Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) infection in Togo ( Bakai et al, 2020 ; Thomas et al, 2020 ), making the standards of care unilateral with important implications in disease epidemiology.…”
