Abstract:This paper aims to review and discuss important advances in renal medicine that have occurred in the last 50 years. This has shaped the way that patients with end-stage renal failure (ESRF) are managed, with emphasis on renal replacement therapy (RRT), and has resulted in widereaching improvements in each patient's journey. These changes have been summarized in an easily accessible form and addressed from the perspective of the United Kingdom.
