Changes in Sharing and Participation are Important Predictors of the Health of Traditional Harvest Practices in Indigenous Communities in Alaska

Abstract: The well-being of Indigenous communities in Alaska is inextricably linked to traditional harvest practices (THPs) such as hunting, fishing, and gathering local wild foods. Regional trends in the health of THPs have not been quantitatively evaluated in Alaska. Therefore, we surveyed Indigenous residents in the Western Coastal (n = 623) and Interior (n = 437) Regions of Alaska to estimate perceptions of the extent and cause of change in the health of THPs over the last ten years. We found that THPs improved in W… Show more

“…Caring for the well-being of extended family may even take precedence over household obligations. Many expressions of material interdependence among Indigenous populations predate the explicitly financial form but are maintained through an "in-kind" form of interdependence, such as sharing the harvest of traditional foods to ensure collective food security [39]. “…In the northern Bering Sea/Bering Strait region, the non-commercial acquisition and utilization of diverse marine wildlife are essential to the nutritional, cultural, and economic well-being of coastal communities (Figure 7) [29,30]. The recent regional reduction in the duration, extent, and quality of sea ice continues to cascade into an ecosystem transition based on newly arrived cod predation on lower trophic levels, resulting in widespread concern by coastal residents.…”

“…The role of social capital is seen as a significant facilitator in building resilience strategies to climatic changes (Brinkman et al, 2022;Hsueh, 2019). Though studies have documented the role of social capital in the recovery process during disasters and crises (e.g., Aldrich and Meyer, 2015;Roque et al, 2020;Harte et el., 2009;Ludin et al, 2019;Straub et al, 2020), the social dimensions of resilience contributing to social capital in response to climate change have rarely been studied.…”
