Changes in the anti-oxidant system in adult epilepsy patients receiving anti-epileptic drugs

Abstract: Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) have been widely used in patients with epilepsy. This study evaluated the adverse effects of two commonly prescribed AED monotherapies, carbamazepine (CBZ) and valproic acid (VPA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of these anti-epileptic drugs on paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) activities in the serum of adult patients with epilepsy. Of the 56 epileptic adults, 28 were given valproate, and the remaining 28 we… Show more

“…In our study, lowered levels of CMPAase yielded an area under the ROC curve of around 0.893 for TLE and MTS. These findings extend those of previous publications reporting significantly reduced levels of PON1 and arylesterase in patients with epilepsy when compared to healthy controls (24,33).…”

“…S. eriopho ra extracts inhibitory activities on AChE and BChE was determined. Acetylthiocholine iodide (AChI) and butyrylcholine iodide (BChI) were used as substrates for activity studies of enzymes (Işık et al, ). BChE or AChE activities were defined using 5,5′‐dithiobis (2‐nitrobenzoic) acid (DTNB).…”

“…The inhibitory activities of L. cretica extracts against AChE and BChE were determined. [57] Acetylthiocholine iodide (AChI) and butyrylcholine iodide (BChI) were used as substrates for activity studies of enzymes. Also, BChE/AChE activities were defined by using 5,5'dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic) acid (DTNB).…”
