A submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) supplied with inorganic ammonium-bearing wastewater (NH 4 + -N, 500 mg l −1 ) was operated for 260 days without sludge purge under decreased hydraulic retention times (HRT) through six steps (from 30 to 5 h). Almost complete nitrification was obtained at a volumetric loading rate (VLR) 1.2 g NH 4 + -N l −1 day −1 . The sludge nitrification activities were evaluated at each stage. The specific ammonium oxidizing rate (SAOR) decreased from the initial 0.45 to 0.15 kg NH 4 + -N kg −1 MLSS day −1 in the last four stages, while the specific nitrate forming rate (SNFR) increased from 0.17 to 0.39 kg NO 3 − -N kg −1 MLSS day −1 at the third stage, and then decreased to below 0.1 kg NO 3from the fourth stage. Microbial population dynamics was investigated by a combination of the MPN method, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and quinone profiles. During the experiment, although the MLSS increased gradually from 4.5 to 11.5 g l −1 , the number of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) decreased from 10 9 l −1 at the third stage to 10 7 l −1 in the last two stages, and that of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) decreased gradually from 10 8 l −1 at the second stage (HRT of 20 h) to the final 10 5 l −1 . FISH results showed that the active cells decreased gradually with time from about 60 to 20% in the last two stages, and most of sludge was inert cells. The sum of nitrifiers occupied only about 10% of the total bacteria number in the last stage even though only ammonium-bearing inorganic wastewater was fed in. Nitrosomonas sp. and Nitrospira sp. were confirmed by FISH as the dominant nitrifying genera responsible for ammonia and nitrite oxidation, respectively. In the mean time, a small ratio of Nitrobacter sp. also existed in the system. FISH analysis matched better with the batch activity test results than did the MPN techniques. Quinone profiles revealed that the dominant ubiquinone was ubiquinone-8 (UQ-8), ranging from 84 to 66%, followed by UQ-10 of 7-13%, UQ-7 of 3-5% and UQ-9 of 1.6-2.6%. The dominant menaquinone in the MBR was menaquinone-7 (MK-7) followed by MK-6, MK-8 and MK-8 (H 2 ). With the prolongation of operation, the percentage of menaquinones increased from 8 to 14%. The use of the polyphasic approach gave some new insight on variations of microbial community structures.

Professor adjunto do DZ da FAEM/UFPEL ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do sistema de compostagem de dejetos e da aeração passiva no tratamento de resíduos da produção animal no município de Capão do Leão, no Rio Grande do Sul. Utilizou-se uma estrutura coberta com filme de polietileno de baixa densidade e aberta nas laterais, que recebeu seis caixas de plástico reforçado com fibra de vidro. O estudo foi realizado com dois tratamentos, os quais foram constituídos pela mistura de dejetos líquidos de bovinos leiteiros e maravalha, e de bovinos leiteiros e cama de aviário de dois lotes de frangos de corte. O SISCODE é eficiente na transformação dos resíduos líquidos em sólidos da produção animal, já que a alta umidade relativa e a baixa temperatura ambiente no município não afetam tal sistema de tratamento. A aeração passiva não é eficiente na evaporação do excedente de água e na oxigenação dos substratos compostados, não devendo ser utilizada na compostagem da mistura de resíduos líquidos e sólidos da produção animal.Palavras-chave: bovinocultura; cama de aviário; dejeto líquido; sustentabilidade ambiental. AbstractA trial was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of composting of residues system and passive aeration for treating animal residues in Capão do Leão, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A low-density polythene film covered up a laterally opened structure was used. Such structure was to protect six plastic and glass fiber boxes. The study was carried out with two treatments, which were constituted by a mixture of liquid bovine residues and wood shaving; and a mixture of liquid bovine residues and poultry litter. SISCODE is efficient for transformation of the liquid in solid residues, given that local high-relative humidity and the low environmental temperature do not affect such residues treatment system. Passive aeration is not efficient for both evaporating excess of water and oxygenating composting substrates. Therefore, it should not be used for composting a mixture of liquid and solid residues from animal production.

As produções máximas de xilanase (7237,9 U/g de substrato) e endoglucanase (46,2 U/g de substrato) por A. fumigatus M.7.1 foram observadas pelo cultivo do fungo em palha de milho e farelo de trigo (9:1 p/p) e bagaço de cana e farelo de trigo (9:1 p/p), respectivamente. Em relação ao isolado Myceliophthora sp M.7.7, os picos de produção enzimático produzido por Myceliophthora sp M.7.7, havendo a liberação de 0,5 mg/mL de açúcar redutor. Os resultados de peso seco após a hidrólise não foram significativos, chegando no máximo 10% de perda da massa inicial. Nas analise por HPAEC-PAD foi possível identificar 6 carboidratos (glicose, xilose, celobiose, xilobiose, arabinose e galactose) nos hidrolisados de A. fumigatus M.7.1 e Myceliophthora sp M.7.7. A endoglucanase de ambos microrganismo e a endoxilanase e β-xilosidase de A. fumigatus M.7.1 não sofrem efeito inibitório pela xilose e glicose, quando estes são adicionados na mistura de reação, enquanto que ambas β-glucosidase e a xilanase de Myceliophothora sp. M.7.7 perderam 60% e 40% da atividade inicial em 20 mM de glicose e 8 mM de xilose, respectivamente.Palavras-chave: bagaço de cana, fungo termofílico, fermentação estado sólido, hemicelulases, celulases, pré tratamento, hidrólise enzimática.
