Changes in the Phytoalexin Content of Various Vitis Spp. in Response to Ultraviolet C Elicitation

Abstract: The phytoalexin production potential of three American Vitis species and that of three cultivars of Vitis vinifera were evaluated in response to UV-C irradiation. Time course changes in resveratrol, piceid, epsilon-viniferin, and pterostilbene contents were studied within 3 days after a short UV-C irradiation. Results show that the two major stilbenes accumulated as a response to UV-C elicitation are resveratrol and epsilon-viniferin, a resveratrol dehydrodimer, the concentration of both compounds usually reac… Show more

“…1D) increased to a maximum of 71.06 ± 1.87 μg/g FW at 100 DAF and declined at 110 DAF. The stilbene content in grape berries depends on the grape cultivar (Douillet-Breuil et al, 1999;Li et al, 2006;Guerrero et al, 2010), and stilbene biosynthesis is related to the stage of development (Versari et al 2001;Fornara et al, 2008). Our results show that the stilbene content in berry skins increased from véraison to the ripening stage, in agreement with the findings of Gatto et al (2008) and Dai et al (2012).…”

“…Both biotic and abiotic stresses (UV exposure, AlCl 3 treatment) have been shown to induce the accumulation of stilbenes and the expression of genes involved in stilbene biosynthesis in grapevine (Fritzmeier and Kindl, 1981;Adrian et al, 1996;Douillet-Breuil et al, 1999;Kortekamp, 2006). Therefore, we analyzed ROMT gene expression in grapevine leaf discs submitted to abiotic stresses and fungal infection.…”

“…UV light, AlCl 3 treatments and fungal infection have been shown to induce the accumulation of stilbenes in grapevine leaves (Fritzmeier and Kindl, 1981;Adrian et al, 1996;Douillet-Breuil et al, 1999). However, in grapevine tissues, pterostilbene usually accumulates in low amounts compared to other resveratrol derivatives (Langcake et al, 1979;Pezet and Pont, 1988).…”

“…Postharvest treatment with UV-C light has been proposed as a valuable method to increase the stilbenes content in the grape berries (Langcake and Pryce 1977;Douillet-Breuil et al 1999;Versari et al 2001;Petit et al 2009;Yin et al 2016). Postharvest treatment of grape varieties with UV-C resulted in higher concentrations of stilbenes, such as E-resveratrol, piceatannol, viniferins and pterostilbene (Table 2, no.…”
