Changes in the vaginal epithelium of the guinea‐pig during the oestrous cycle

Selle.Cambios en el epitelio vaginal del conejillo de Indias durante el ciclo 6strico.El ciclo Estrico del conejillo de Indias presenta cuatro periodos o estados bien definitlos, ademSs del intervalo, que correspontie a estados semejantes de la rata. E n el primer estado, que en apariencia no ha sido notado por Stockard y Papanicolaou, cl frote vaginal contiene solamente grandes cklulas epiteliales granuh a s y vacuolares. Estas cklulas epiteliales derivan de las capas superficiales de la mucosa, debajo de las cuales ha tenido lugar la eornificacihn. La niucosa alcanza su niayor altura en estc periodo. E n el estado 2, las cklulas epiteliales superficiales han desaparecido, dejarido como capa mlis externa el estrato c6rneo. Este Gltimo mediantc clescarnacihn susniinistra las cklulas tipicas, anucleaclas, en forma de copos, del frote. Hasta este momento la semejanza con la rata cs niuy estrecha. Sin einbargo, en el conejillo de Indias toda la capa cornea, no todo el epitelio, con algurias de las cdulas no cornificadas pueden ser expulsadas en masa. Mientras que en el estado 3 de la rata el material granular y caseoso consta de elementos del estrato cbrneo, descamado rlipidamente, aisladamente o en pequefios grupos, hasta desaparecer por completo, en el conejillo de Indias la masa caseosa descrita por Stockard y Papanicolaou estd constituida por las eklulas epiteliales no cornificadas situadas mlis profundamente, las cuales se desprenden en grandes nfimeros. En el tiltimo estado (4) 10s leucocitos descritos por Stockard y Papanicolaou en su estado 3 aparecen. El autor no ha hallado estado alguno que corresponda a su estado 4. KO existe prueba alguna sobre la importante contribucih del Gtero a 10s elernentos celulares de la vagina, pues la lllltima cs prhcticamente idhtica en 10s conejillos norniales y en 10s histerectomizados. Characterization of the estrous cycle in Galea spixii(Wagler, 1831)

In G. spixii, the predominant cell types in the different phases of the estrous cycle were easier to detect during the proestrus and estrus by vaginal exfoliative cytology, similar to that found in other rodents such as Cavia porcellus (Selle 1922, Lilley et al 1997) Dasyprocta prymnolopha (Guimarães et al 1997), Agouti paca (Guimarães et al 2008) and Myocastor coypus (Felipe et al 2001).
