Changes in Urban Mobility Related to the Public Bike System with Regard to Weather Conditions and Statutory Retail Restrictions

Abstract: The main purpose of the paper is to determine changes in transport behaviour of users of the public bike-share (PBS) scheme in a large Polish city, Łódź. By tracking GPS signals for individual trips taken by PBS users, it was possible to analyse their changeability (time and spatial) for periods before the implementation of statutory Sunday retail restrictions (2017) and after their partial introduction (2018). The study also took into account weather conditions, namely maximum and minimum daily temperatures a… Show more

“…The spatial and temporal changeability of traffic volumes on a citywide scale (as observed under the Sunday retail restrictions) has been the subject of a number of studies [15,19,27,34,51]. Their findings are consistent with those made on a microscale (single intersection) (Figure 5).…”

“…However, compared to other types of shared mobility, research in the area of demand analysis has been more focused on ride-sharing, and, especially, docked bike-sharing. The most widely used format in demand analysis is converting origin-destination information from trip data into spatio-temporal data, which is then supplemented by additional data such as weather [42,89,90,91], socio-economic [92,93,94], and environmental [95,96,97], to provide a more thorough understanding of demand patterns.…”

“…For instance, weather can impact the usage of shared mobility services as various weather conditions can either increase or decrease the likelihood of customers using certain transportation modes [91,98,99]. Population density and income levels, which are part of socio-economic data, can also affect demand as regions with higher population density and income tend to have a higher demand for shared mobility services, seen as a convenient and economical alternative to personal vehicle ownership [95].…”

“…Bicycle-sharing systems are a relatively new element in the urban transport system and have been strongly growing in recent years (Fishman, 2015, Todd et al, 2021. They provide a sustainable transport alternative (DeMaio, 2009;Zhang et al, 2015;Szymańska et al, 2016;Kwiatkowski, 2018aKwiatkowski, , 2018bBorowska-Stefańska et al, 2021), which is especially appreciated in crowded centres of large cities (Hamilton & Wichman, 2018). This is also relevant to the increasing levels of urban pollution (Arsovski et al, 2018;Słodczyk, 2020).…”
