Changes of Anthocyanin Component Biosynthesis in ‘Summer Black’ Grape Berries after the Red Flesh Mutation Occurred

Abstract: The coloring process of grape flesh is valuable for research and promotion of the high nutritional quality of anthocyanins. 'Summer Black' and it is new red flesh mutant were used to analyze the changes of anthocyanin biosynthesis during grape berry development. Eighteen kinds of anthocyanins were detected in mature berries of the two cultivars, but the content of most 3'- and 3',5'-substituted anthocyanins was higher in the skin of the mutant. Anthocyanin accumulation occurred simultaneously in the skin and f… Show more

“…Furthermore, tomatoes can also accumulate anthocyanins as well as carotenoids if they are manipulated to express the necessary genes [ 53 ]. Strawberries, black grapes and Chinese bayberry are examples of fruits that lose chlorophyll and normally only accumulate anthocyanins [ 40 , 54 , 55 ].…”

“…In this study, red fleshed clones and varieties descended from ‘Teinturier’ were the chief focus. Red fleshed varieties or clones have been identified from other lineages, not related to ‘Teinturier’, such as sports or clones from the varieties ‘Gamay Noir’ or ‘Summer Black’, but they show no direct relationship to the original teinturier varieties analyzed in this study [ 31 , 32 ]. Periclinal chimera sports in which the L1 layer is black fruited and the L2 layer is white fruited have been identified from several varieties, such as ‘Pinot Gris’ or ‘Malian’ (bud sports of ‘Pinot Noir’ and ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, respectively) [ 33 , 34 ].…”
