Changes to virus taxonomy and the ICTV Statutes ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (2023)

Abstract: This article reports changes to virus taxonomy and taxon nomenclature that were approved and ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) in April 2023. The entire ICTV membership was invited to vote on 174 taxonomic proposals that had been approved by the ICTV Executive Committee in July 2022, as well as a proposed revision of the ICTV Statutes. All proposals and the revised ICTV Statutes were approved by a majority of the voting membership. Of note, the ICTV continued the process of … Show more

“…In a recent proposal by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), the families Podoviridae , Siphoviridae , and Myoviridae as well as the order Caudovirales were abolished, and a binomial system of nomenclature for species was proposed that included gene transfer agents (GTAs) in the taxonomic framework by classifying them as viriforms. This led to the creation of one class, seven orders, 31 families, 214 genera, and 858 species [ 17 ]. Due to the recently mandated binomial nomenclature format, 8982 of the current 11,273 species now have binomial names.…”

“…Due to the recently mandated binomial nomenclature format, 8982 of the current 11,273 species now have binomial names. For further information, the reader is referred to Zerbini et al [ 17 ]. Phage genomes are either single-stranded (ss)DNA, double-stranded (ds)DNA, dsRNA, or ssRNA.…”

“…Coxsackieviruses belonging to the Enterovirus genus of the Picornaviridae family are classified under Enterovirus A and Enterovirus B species [ 1 , 2 ]. Enterovirus A species consisting of Coxsackievirus A serotypes primarily cause diseases associated with the skin, mucous membranes, and musculoskeletal systems, such as Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease [ 3 , 4 , 5 ].…”

“…All tailed phages were assigned to the class Caudoviricetes , which belonged, in turn, to the type Uroviricota of the kingdom Heunggongvirae of the realm Duplodnaviria . In 2022–2023, the new system was further refined, with the emergence of new high-ranking taxa at the level of subfamilies and higher, as well as new genera [ 9 , 10 ]. However, most of the more than 20,000 bacteriophages known to science, whose genomes are presented in the NCBI GenBank database, have not yet been classified, which is partly due to difficulties in substantiating the taxonomic descriptions of phages.…”
