Changing patterns of thyroid cancer in different stages of Universal Salt Iodization in Peking Union Medical College Hospital, 1986–2018

Abstract: Backgrounds: Iodine intake may be associated with increased thyroid cancer, but its effect varied from places to places. Universal salt iodization (USI) has been introduced in China from 1996 to 2012. The effects of increased iodine intake on thyroid cancer needs to be investigated in China. Methods: From 1986 to 2018, patients who had thyroidectomies in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) were retrospectively studied. The detection rate, constituent ratio, mean age, sex distribution of thyroid cancer… Show more

“…In the African continent, there is a wide variation in the prevalence rates of histological types of TC as follows: papillary (6.7–72.1%), follicular (4.9–68%), anaplastic (5–21.4%) and medullary (2.6–13.8%) [ 17 ]. Notably, there is a changing trend in Africa toward the more frequent occurrence of papillary carcinoma compared to follicular carcinoma; the most likely explanation for this changing trend may be attributable to the changing iodine status as a result of widespread iodization program [ 17 , 46 ].…”

“…The rapid development of high-resolution technologies has increased the detection rate for thyroid cancer [ 26 ]. However, the invasive FNAB procedure still remains the diagnostic tool of choice [ 27 ].…”

“…A retrospective study based on patients who underwent thyroidectomy at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) from 1986 to 2018 implied that PTC has become the predominant type in TC surgery after USI, while the proportion of other histological subtypes has remained stable during this period ( 55 ). Therefore, we focused on the effect of iodine levels on PTC.…”
