Changing trends in lipid profile and biomarkers of renal function and bone metabolism before and after switching from tenofovir disoproxil fumarate to tenofovir alafenamide: a prospective observational study

Abstract: Background Antiretrovirals, including tenofovir, can suppress human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection but cannot completely eradicate it. Patients with HIV infection are administered antiretroviral drugs over a long term; thus, managing consequent adverse drug reactions, such as renal dysfunction and bone mineral loss, is important. Currently, highly sensitive biomarkers that can detect adverse drug reactions early have not been well studied. Methods … Show more

“…La elevación de los niveles de colesterol, aunque estadísticamente significativa, no fue clínicamente relevante y puede explicarse porque más del 50% de los pacientes cambiaron a B/F/TAF a partir de RPV/F/TDF y con ello se perdió el papel hipolipemiante del TDF [ 7 ].…”

“…While less is understood about the impact ART on lipid metabolism in kidney, tenofovir decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein and increased the rate of change in urine-liver-type fatty acid binding protein/creatinine. These are known markers of elevated risk of hyperlipidemia and chronic kidney disease respectively ( 99 ), demonstrating a precedence for ART promoting lipid dysregulation in kidney. The contribution of ART to lipid perturbations in kidney has profound implications for people with HIV as lipid metabolism is highly relevant to kidney health, as it is the organ that preferentially oxidizes fatty acids used for energy.…”
