Chaos-based communications at high bit rates using commercial fibre-optic links

Abstract: Chaotic signals have been proposed as broadband information carriers with the potential of providing a high level of robustness and privacy in data transmission. Laboratory demonstrations of chaos-based optical communications have already shown the potential of this technology, but a field experiment using commercial optical networks has not been undertaken so far. Here we demonstrate high-speed long-distance communication based on chaos synchronization over a commercial fibre-optic channel. An optical carrier… Show more

“…In particular, the latter have proven to be practical benchmark systems to study delay dynamics [3,4]. Moreover, these oscillators have turned out to be versatile systems for novel applications such as chaos communications [5] or generation of ultra-high spectral purity microwaves [6]. The main dynamical features of this test-bed system are well documented and characterized, both from the theoretical and the experimental point of view [7].…”

“…The study of the noisy case on the communication channel is left for a future improved version of the proposed secure communication scheme. Although, in digital communications using fibre-optic links, low-frequency noise can be avoided [22]. Finally, the experiment employing Arduino showed the applicability of using discrete chaotic oscillators in today digital technology at the hand of almost anybody.…”
