“…While this treatment does not clearly address any mechanism of dormancy break in the field, it did result in differentiation among the three seed populations. This means that a laboratory or field experiment with a single seed population is not generalizable across the species, which is consistent with findings from other species (Farooq et al, 2021 ; Meyer et al, 1995 ). Whether these differences are the result of selection on genetic variation or are maternal effects due to differences in seed ripening conditions is not known.…”

“…As an adaptive trait, deep seed dormancy appears to promote plant survival in high‐elevation habitats (Baskin & Baskin, 2014 ). Consistently, S. longifolia populations contain higher proportions of dormant seeds at high elevations (Cotado et al, 2020 ), Physalis species show an increase in dormant seeds with increasing elevation (Farooq et al, 2021 ), and C. halicacabum seeds show more complex seed dormancy at high elevations than at low elevations (Thusithana et al, 2021 ). These results suggest that natural selection pressure should favor plants that produce more dormant mature seeds at higher elevations.…”

“…sylvestris ) are threatened by climate warming due to compromised seed dormancy release (Orrù et al, 2012 ). Furthermore, a positive relationship exists between the number of dormant seeds and elevation in Physalis (Solanaceae) species (Farooq et al, 2021 ). While previous studies have reported on variation in SDS with elevation at the intra‐ or interspecific level, climatic factors, such as temperature and precipitation, are also likely to play important roles in modulating SDS variation with elevation.…”

“…The maximum germination values were obtained near an osmotic potential of 0 MPa. Farook et al [22] observed that Physalis species exhibit physiological dormancy, which can be released by soaking the seeds in water. This phenomenon may have contributed to the findings of the present study.…”

“…The authors also observed that dormancy was interrupted by temperature variations, explaining the high rate of germinated seeds in the field in their study. Farook et al [22] evaluated several Physalis species and found that they exhibit physiological dormancy (PD), which can be released by keeping the seeds in the presence of water. Additionally, gibberellic acid (GA3) can also be used to stimulate the germination of Physalis species seeds.…”
