Characteristics of (002) Oriented Hydroxyapatite Coatings Deposited by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings with strong (002) preferred orientation were successfully prepared on Ti-6Al-4V substrates with conventional atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The intensity changes of (002) preferred orientation along the coating depth were investigated and the mechanical properties of these coatings were analyzed. Results indicated that the intensity of (002) preferred orientation at a distance of longer than ~90 mm from the interface showed a high value, where uniformly distributed columnar gra… Show more

“…The most intense diffraction peak, which is characteristic for electrochemical deposited coatings, is located at ~26 • and is associated with the (002) plane, indicating that the HAp crystals are oriented perpendicular to the NT surface [42]. According to the literature, the HAp with a c-axis orientation increases cell proliferation, chemical stability, and mechanical properties [63,64]. Moreover, as can be observed in Figure 4 and Table 3, the addition of Zn into the HAp structure has led to shifts towards higher angles, indicating the substitution of higher ionic radius Ca 2+ (0.099 nm) ions for those of Zn 2+ (0.074 nm), which have a smaller ionic radius, inducing the contraction of the HAp lattice [65].…”

“…Nevertheless, the strongest relative intensity was registered for the plan (002) at 25.95 • which is typical for electrochemical deposition [36,50,51], suggesting that the coatings are grown perpendicular on the Ti6Al4V substrate. According to the literature, oriented HAp may enable control over cells' behavior [52], and in particular the (002) preferred orientation promotes cell adhesion [53,54]. All of the coatings present a small peak which was assigned to monetite (ICDD, #01-071-1759), a precursor of hydroxyapatite.…”

“…For depositing CaP coatings onto metallic implants, the industrial technique of choice is plasma-spraying, due to the synthesis speed, large area of deposition, and work in an ambient atmosphere [17]. However, HA coatings produced using this technique are prone to cracking and delamination and, because of high-processing temperatures, could contain residual decomposition phases.…”
