Characterization and In Vitro Studies of Low Reflective Magnetite (Fe3O4) Thin Film on Stainless Steel 420A Developed by Chemical Method

Abstract: Stainless steel has been the most demanded material for surgical utensil manufacture due to superior mechanical properties, sufficient wear, and corrosion resistance. Surgical grade 420A stainless steel is extensively used for producing sophisticated surgical instruments. Since these instruments are used under bright light conditions prevalent in operation theatres, the reflection from the material is significant which causes considerable strain to the eye of the surgeon. Surgical instruments with lower reflec… Show more

“…It is mainly categorized according to the required output characteristics which divided into three types: Smaller-the-Better, Larger-the-Better, or Nominal-the-Better. [27][28][29] Corrosion current (I corr ) should follow Smaller-the-Better characteristics, since lower I corr value is mean to obtain a better corrosion resistance coating on low Sncoated steel. Meanwhile, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis were also conducted.…”

“…In former studies conducted conversion coating methodology was adopted for coating various grades of SS (SS 310, SS 420A). 51,52 The measured average percentage reflectance values of SS 310 and SS 420A were measured as 11.29% and 7.546%, respectively. In this study, the average percentage of reflectance value was observed to be 8.38%, in the visible region.…”

“…So, a thin coating with low reflection on the instruments is proposed to overcome the serious problem. Black coloured magnetite (Fe3O4) coating of optimum functionality on the surface of SS 420A has been developed in hotalkaline medium as given in the eqs (15)(16)(17). [15,145] 4Fe + NaNO3 + 5NaOH → 3Na2FeO2 + FeO + H2O + NH3…”
