Characterization and Quantification of Anthocyanins and Polyphenolics in Blue Honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea L.)

Abstract: Anthocyanins and phenolics of 10 blue honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea L.) genotypes were characterized and quantified by HPLC-DAD. Peak assignments were confirmed by low-resolution electrospray mass spectrometry. Six anthocyanins were detected with the major peak identified as cyanidin 3-glucoside. Five additional anthocyanins were characterized as cyanidin 3,5-diglucoside, cyanidin 3-rutinoside, pelargonidin 3-glucoside, peonidin 3-glucoside, and peonidin 3-rutinoside. Four polyphenolics were identified as chl… Show more

“…Other hydroxycinnamic acid and hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives are mentioned in the literature, especially m-coumaric and p-coumaric. The amount of hydroxycinnamic acids derivatives is described as comparable to blueberries or blackcurrant 46 . Also dimethoxycinnamic, hydroxycaff eic, gallic, o-pyrocatechuic, protocatechuic, salicylic, p-hydroxyphenylacetic and p-hydroxyphenyllactic acid are reported 45 .…”

“…Berries have been long harvested from wild plants in regions of Russia, China, and Japan (Thompson and Chaovanalikit, 2006). However, in the scientific literature, the taxonomic classification of the species bearing edible fruits, especially of Lonicera caerulea, is not unequivocal (Chaovanalikit et al, 2004;Plekhanova, 2000). Lonicera caerulea, the blue honeysuckle, is also dubbed honeyberry, sweet berry honeysuckle, edible honeysuckle, haskap, haskup, hasukappu or haskappu.…”
