Characterization and quantification of the skin radiance through new digital image analysis

Abstract: The questionnaire constructed from this brainstorming session allowed volunteers and experts to judge their perception of skin radiance more precisely. Video imaging appears as an interesting method to quantify visual properties of the skin and to visualize what the consumer perceives of skin radiance. However, the mathematical model proposed from the skin surface parameters analysis does not totally explain the global perception of skin radiance. In the future, it will be necessary to develop new data-process… Show more

“…According to several authors, the skin radiance appears to be the combination of the light reflection within the skin (luminosity and brightness), level of skin imperfections, and skin color. 3 , 4 , 6 Complemented by appropriate techniques, sensory evaluation seems to be a good method to appreciate skin radiance as a whole.…”

“…The radiance of the complexion is multifactorial and it is difficult to list all the parameters that constitute it with their relative proportions. 3 – 5 The main characteristics are the skin contrast defined by the luminosity, brightness, and transparency; the skin color, mainly affected by the skin microcirculation; and the skin imperfections such as the homogeneity, dark circles, or spots. 3 , 4 , 6…”

“…All the parameters that constitute it and their relative proportions are difficult to list; they involve complex surface and internal qualities of the skin. 17 In 2006, Baret et al 18 organized a round table meeting with women. As the result of these exchanges, many items (including the skin grain, brightness and colour) were selected and studied in volunteers of different age groups from image analysis of video data of their face.…”

“…This is because skin radiance is a psychologically defined quantity, despite the fact that it is a type of optical skin reflection (or the psychologically determined category of this reflection). For instance, Baret and colleagues [12] proposed a mathematical model based on instrumental data to quantify the global radiance phenomenon. However, the model did not totally explain the global perception of skin radiance.…”
