Metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous pollutants in airborne particulate matter. I n order to better understand the concentrations an d origins of metal s and PAHs bound to particulate matter in Lanzhou city in northwest China, six metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Cr) and 16 selected PAHs in 108 part iculate matter samples were quantifi ed by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results demonstrated that metals and PAHs in the ambient air of Lanzhou city showed regional and seasonal trends, and their concentrations were higher than those in several other Asian and European cities. The high molecular weight PAHs in winter were higher than in summer in both Xigu District and Yuzhong town. The principle components analysis (PCA) method was applied to analyze the sources of metals bound to particulate matters (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , TSP) and PAHs bound to PM 10 , and results showed that vehicle emissions, coal combustion, and oil combustion were probably the main sources of metal and PAHs in Lanzhou PM.

The long-term (1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010) monitoring data for cadmium (Cd) collected from seven major cities in Korea were evaluated to assess spatial-temporal trends in urban areas and help improve air quality control. The results show that the level of Cd pollution in the different cities, as distinguished by industrial activity, was the highest in Ulsan (9.21 ± 6.29 ng/m 3 ) and Incheon (6.25 ± 6.05 ng/m 3 ). During the study period, Cd concentrations showed significant reductions in all monitoring cities, especially in the more industrialized ones (e.g., a nearly six-fold reduction in Ulsan over 13 years), while in other areas this reduction was more moderate (about 1.7-fold). In addition, Cd concentrations generally peaked in the winter, with the exception of the more industrialized areas. Although Cd levels in Ulsan and Incheon exceeded the general guidelines of 5 ng/m 3 (e.g., those of the US EPA) until recently (e.g., 2004), its values in most urban areas in Korea have been continuously decreasing over the 20-year period examined in this work. Therefore, greater efforts are necessary to more effectively reduce Cd released from the prominent source activities in the urban environments.

A maior indústria de aço do Brasil está situada na cidade de Volta Redonda, RJ. A produção de coque neste tipo de indústria é a maior fonte de emissão de compostos aromáticos. Com objetivo de implementar medidas de controle da poluição nas indústrias a FEEMA, agência ambiental do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, avaliou a qualidade do ar naquela cidade em Dec/95-Mai/96 e Abr-Mai/99. Na primeira campanha, material particulado total (MPT), benzeno, tolueno, xilenos (BTX) e dióxido de enxofre (SO 2 ) foram analisados e concentrações médias altas foram encontradas: 102 µg m -3 , 70 µg m -3 , 23 µg m -3 , 2,5 µg m -3 e 186 µg m -3 , respectivamente. Após medidas drásticas de controle, a segunda avaliação (Abr-Mai/99), apresentou valores menores: 102 µg m -3 (TSP); 62 µg m -3 (PM 10 ), 23 µg m -3 (B), 4 µg m -3 (T), 0,6 µg m -3 (X), 73 µg m -3 (SO 2 ) além de metais. Esses resultados, principalmente para benzeno, indicam que o programa de monitoramento deve continuar até atingir a solução final para o problema.The largest steel plant in Brazil is located in Volta Redonda city, RJ. Coke production in this kind of industry is the major emission source of aromatic compounds. Aiming the implementation of pollution control measures in industries, FEEMA, Rio de Janeiro State environmental agency, evaluated air quality in that city in Dec/95-May/96 and Apr-May/99. In the first campaign, total suspended particles (TSP), benzene, toluene, xylenes (BTX) and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) were analyzed and high average concentrations were found 102 µg m -3 , 70 µg m -3 , 23 µg m -3 , 2.5 µg m -3 and 186 µg m -3 , respectively. Following drastic control measures, the second evaluation (Apr-May/99) showed values that dropped to 102 µg m -3 (TSP); 62 µg m -3 (PM 10 ), 23 µg m -3 (B), 4 µg m -3 (T), 0.6 µg m -3 (X), 73 µg m -3 (SO 2 ) besides metals. It has a current population of 250,000 inhabitants, and is the source of one of the state's main revenues. 1 Its environmental problems are basically related to air pollution resulting from the type and location of the region's industrial activities. The most important source of organic pollutants in the monitored area is coke production at National Steel Company (CSN) (4.6 x 10 6 metric tons/year).
