Characterization of polyethyleneimine modified with organotin halides. Thermal, solubility, and fungal properties

Abstract: SynopsisModified polyethyleneimine products are hydrophobic with products from monohalotin reactants soluble in HMPA, DMSO, CHC13, and 2,4-pentanedione, while products from dihalotin reactants are insoluble in all solvents. Antifungal activity varies markedly with the nature of the tin moiety. For products from triphenyltin chloride, antifungal activity is widespread and suitable to about 40 ppb of the polymer, which is clearly acceptable for medical and industrial uses. Thus, such modified polymers can be use… Show more

“…Products from natural sources include those from cotton (cellulose), [105][106][107] dextran, 108-117 xylan, 118,119 lignin. [120][121][122][123] Products from synthetic polymers include those from poly(vinyl alcohol), 124,125 polyacrylonitrile, 126,127 polyethyleneimine, [128][129][130] and poly(acrylic acid) and ionomers. 6 -13,131 For illustrative purposes for natural polymers we will use dextran.…”

“…129 We synthesized a number of organotin-containing materials from reaction with simple sugars such as sucrose. 137,138 As expected these products are crosslinked, with the primary sites of reaction being the ring-hydroxyls as shown for a dimethyltincontaining moiety, 34.…”

“…High performance organometallic polymers which can offer properties like electronic, photonic and biomedical have drawn much attention in the field of polymer science and engineering (Carraher et al, 1979;Carraher and Roner, 2009). Metal incorporation is an important synthetic approach which can modify its surface and biological activity or provide sites for further modifications to improve the biocompatibility of organic compounds.…”
