Characterization of the Relationship Between Intracranial Pressure and Electroencephalographic Monitoring in Burst-Suppressed Patients

Abstract: Objective To characterize the relationship between ICP and EEG Methods Simultaneous ICP and EEG data were obtained from burst-suppressed patients and segmented by EEG bursts. Segments were categorized as increasing/decreasing and peak/valley to investigate relationship between ICP changes and EEG burst duration. A generalized ICP response was obtained by averaging all segments time-aligned at burst onsets. A vasodilatation index (VDI) was derived from the ICP pulse waveform and calculated on a sliding interv… Show more

“…This is a significant undertaking and will be pursued in a separate work, however, it is important to note that mean ICP is generally used clinically for diagnosis of intracranial hypertension. Nonetheless, it is expected that improved modeling of CSF and ICP dynamics will improve the predictive capabilities of even mean ICP, and moreover emerging research 8,3 is recognizing the importance of ICP waveform analysis for diagnosis and differentiation of cerebral pathologies and treatment management.…”

“…1,6 Only a small number of studies document the impact of burst suppression therapy on ICP control. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13] The goal of our study is to perform a systematic review of the literature on targeting burst suppression and its effects on ICP in patients with neurological illness.…”
