Characterizing Land–Atmosphere Coupling and the Implications for Subsurface Thermodynamics

Abstract: The objective of this work is to develop a Simple Land-Interface Model (SLIM) that captures the seasonal and interannual behavior of land-atmosphere coupling, as well as the subsequent subsurface temperature evolution. The model employs the one-dimensional thermal diffusion equation driven by a surface flux boundary condition. While the underlying physics is straightforward, the SLIM framework allows a qualitative understanding of the first-order controls that govern the seasonal coupling between the land and … Show more

“…Discrepancies in the frequency content of these two signals might arise from some process that distorts the SAT signal as it enters and diffuses through the subsurface (e.g., Bartlett et al, 2006;Stieglitz and Smerdon, 2007). I explore this issue with a number of synthetic tests.…”

“…However, questions regarding changes in the relationship between air and ground temperatures have prompted detailed investigations often in combination with other meteorological parameters (e.g. Baker and Ruschy, 1993;Putnam and Chapman, 1996;Smerdon et al, 2003Smerdon et al, , 2004Smerdon et al, , 2006Bartlett et al, 2006;Chudinova et al, 2006;Stieglitz and Smerdon, 2007). These studies have found that variations in air and ground temperatures generally track each other over the time period of study.…”

“…For direct contact with the atmosphere, meteorological simulations use a complex parametrization of the boundary layer physics (e.g., Stensrud, 2007). For the long time periods involved here, however, it has been shown that the GST is related to the SAT following a simple relationship (see Smerdon et al, 2003, 2006, and Stieglitz and Smerdon, 2007.…”
