Characterizing Variation in the Bacterial and Fungal Tare Soil Microbiome of Seed Potato

Abstract: For tuberizing crops like potato (Solanum tuberosum), the geocaulosphere, or the thin zone of soil in contact with and influenced by the tuber, is a distinct habitat that exists between the potato and the soil environment. Geocaulosphere soil that remains associated with the tuber after harvest is called tare soil. However, beyond potato pathogens, the microbes present in tare soil are understudied. We used ITS and 16S metabarcoding to characterize the microbial communities present in 130 tare soils of commerc… Show more

“…The microbial communities in the tare soil of seed tubers can serve as a source of inoculum for the developing rhizosphere to promote biocontrol or growth. However, with the exception of potato pathogens, the microbes presented in tare soil are insufficiently studied, and there is also a lack of information on how non-pathogenic microbes in tare soil vary in composition or affect the plant health [63]. Most geocaulosphere studies are focused on fresh soils rather than on tare soils, which are part of the geocaulosphere and are associated with potato tubers after harvest [18].…”

“…Most geocaulosphere studies are focused on fresh soils rather than on tare soils, which are part of the geocaulosphere and are associated with potato tubers after harvest [18]. The environmental conditions and storage time of seed tubers change the microbial abundance in tare soil, which results in a mismatch between the microbial communities of tare soil and fresh geocaulospheric soil [63].…”
