Chatgpt: A Critical Evaluation

Abstract

Recent years have created a growing demand for accessible and practical language learning tools due to the limited availability of personalized interactive language practice opportunities (Chen et al., 2021). As English language education continues to flourish, learners seek new ways to improve language skills and promote autonomous learning. As an artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT has emerged as a promising solution to this problem. It harnesses natural language processing for text-based generation of conversations with users. Designed for users at all levels of language proficiency, it can respond to user inquiries, provide feedback on language skills, and simulate real-life conversation scenarios. With its ability to personalize learning and provide immediate feedback, ChatGPT has the potential to boost language education and improve language learning skills across the globe.Adopting Kohnke and Moorhouse's (2022) framework, this media review evaluates ChatGPT 3.5 for language learning. ChatGPT is available online through internet browsers at https:// chat. openai. com/ auth/ login . To utilize ChatGPT, users must sign up or log in via email, Google, or Microsoft accounts. The website has a user-friendly interface, with six tabs (i.e., new chat, clear conversations, upgrade to plus, light/dark mode, updates and FAQ, and logout) on the left and a main screen on the right that includes examples, capabilities, limitations at the top and the chat box at the bottom. Although it provides the most accurate responses in English because of its language of training, ChatGPT allows users to inquire about any subject in any language. Users might opt for a free plan and ChatGPT Plus ($20/month). Plan upgrade enables availability even on high demands, quicker response, and prioritized access to novel features. Recent updates also allow Plus and Enterprise users to converse with a voice assistant and transcribe audio files to texts via Whisper-an open-source speech recognition system. However, a free account comfortably accommodates user needs. Also, visually sensitive users might switch between light and dark interface modes.One of ChatGPT's distinctive features is immediate feedback on language use, such as grammar, vocabulary, and writing (Figure 1). This allows autonomous learners to identify their strengths and weaknesses in language production and improve their accuracy accordingly. Given matters such as overpopulated classrooms, the heavy workload in various language education contexts, and the accompanying requirement for responsiveness to learner needs and inquiries (Aliakbari et al., 2020), this feature might be leveraged particularly by those wishing for quick and efficient linguistic improvement.
