Checklist of Odonata (Insecta) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil with seven new records

Abstract: The regional knowledge of species diversity and distribution is important to support conservation strategies for species and their habitats. The main goal of this work is to present a checklist of Odonata species in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as their known locations in the municipalities. The preparation of the list was based in data gathered from collections of Museu de Ciências da Universidade do Vale do Taquari (UNIVATES), Laboratório de Ecologia e Evolução da Universidade do Vale do Taquari (… Show more

“…In the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS; area of ~282000 km 2 ), southernmost Brazil, many inventories and studies on the distribution of Odonata have been recently conducted (Renner et al 2015, Renner et al 2016a, b, Renner et al 2017. A recent compilation of the studies conducted in the state mentioned the occurrence of 182 species from nine families and 57 genera (Dalzochio et al 2018), representing ~21% of the known diversity of Odonata in Brazil (Pinto 2019). Nevertheless, as in the rest of the Brazilian territory, many areas of the state remain poorly investigated (Dalzochio et al 2018).…”

“…These records are particularly important because they improve the knowledge of the geographic distribution of these Argentine endemics (Muzón andvon Ellenrieder 2001, von Ellenrieder andMuzón 2006). Moreover, we extend the western limit of the distribution of C. decurvata, a specialist aeshnid, which was previously recorded from only 2 provinces of Argentina (Córdoba and Entre Ríos) and southern Brazil (Dalzochio et al 2018). Another important species recorded from San Luis is P. erythropyga.…”

“…Understanding the distribution of species is essential to determine regional and global patterns of biodiversity (Dalzochio et al, 2018). In this sense, taxonomic inventories contribute to characterize areas of endemism, reveal taxonomic novelties and improve scientific collections (Moura et al, 2014;Freitas et al, 2017).…”
