Chelating Rotaxane Ligands as Fluorescent Sensors for Metal Ions

Abstract: Although metal-ion-binding interlocked molecules have been under intense investigation for over three decades, their application as scaffolds for the development of sensors for metal ions remains underexplored. In this work, we demonstrate the potential of simple rotaxanes as metal-ion-responsive ligand scaffolds through the development of ap roof-ofconcept selective sensor for Zn 2+ .Small-molecule fluorescent probes are powerful tools for visualizing metal ions in living systems due to their rapid response t… Show more

“…[3][4][5] Optical methods based on colourimetric receptors are especially attractive due to their real-time analysis, simplicity, and low cost in comparison to other closely related processes such as uorescence, where UV radiation and sophisticated instruments are required, although the latter is more sensitive than the former. [6][7][8][9][10][11] A small amount of Cu 2+ is required for maintaining good health, but if its concentration is increased, it has a toxic effect on the living body. Cu is the 3rd most important trace element, aer Fe and Zn in various biological metabolic processes.…”

“…The development of organic chromophores with suitable functional groups, capable of reacting physically or chemically with their environment and reporting these reactions through their fluorescence properties, via a remote access, is of tremendous scientific and technological interest. External impulses such as a change in polarity, [1][2][3][4] viscosity, [5][6][7][8] pH, [9][10][11][12][13][14] or the presence of metal ions [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] can be transduced through fluorescence and become perceptible by naked eye.…”

“…The synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecules, such as [ n ]rotaxanes and [ n ]catenanes [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ], has drawn interest due to their unique topologies. They have been applied in the designs of molecular machinery [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ] and molecular sensing [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. For the [ n ]rotaxanes, templated-direct syntheses using secondary dialkylammonium (R 2 NH 2 + ) ions are involved in threading followed by stoppering [ 15 ], slippage [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ] and clipping approaches [ 20 , 21 ] Various macrocycles, such as dibenzo[24]crown-8 (DB24C8) and benzo[21]crown-7 (B21C7), can be threaded through by the dialkylammonium (R 2 NH 2 + ) ions with sufficiently high binding constant [ 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”
