Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of the Essential Oil of Ruta chalepensis L. Growing Wild in Lebanon

Abstract: The essential oils (EOs) isolated from the fresh aerial parts of Ruta chalepensis L. collected in North Lebanon were obtained by solvent-free microwave extraction (Milestone®), yielding 0.12% EO from both the leaves and a mixture of stems and leaves. The EOs were characterized by GC/MS analysis, and 27 components were identified, which were primarily ketones (88.0-93.2%). The main components were nonan-2-one and undecan-2-one. The antimicrobial activity of the EOs against a Gram-positive and a Gram-negative ba… Show more

“…In the present study, the fruit coat of C. colocynthis , pods of S. alexandrina , and leaves of A. aethiopicus showed relatively high antifungal activities in general, which might be attributed to high amounts of specific phenols in these plants. This is in agreement with the results of previous investigations [ 58 , 59 ]. Zhang et al [ 60 ] reported high antifungal activities of Robinia pseudoacacia extracts, and this was attributed to high robinin content.…”

“…An agglomerative hierarchical clustering graph was constructed with XLStat v2013.4.03 based on dissimilarities ( Euclidian distances) with the complete‐linkage aggregation method . The table of observations/variables used in the clustering analysis contained all data published in the cited references, and Table has been extract from the full data table in order to report the compounds that accounted for more than 5% in a least one EO only.…”

“…These results about antifungal activity had been demonstrated in a study conducted by Khoury et al, 2014, which showed that the essential oil from R. chalepensis growing in Lebanon had the major components 2-nonanone, 51.7%, and 2-undecanone, 36.7%, which exhibited antifungal activity against the yeast Candida albicans and the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum [ 54 ].…”
