Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oil of Cupressus atlantica

Abstract: Cupressus atlantica Gaussen, an endemic species from Morocco, is used in traditional medicine. The chemical composition of the essential oil isolated by hydrodistillation from the leaves was investigated by capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and also evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activity. Sixty-one components, representing 98.1% of the total, were detected of which fifty-seven were identified. Germacrene D (34.8%), α-pinene (13.6%), δ-cadinene (6.1%), α-phellandrene … Show more

“…73% contraction of the C. atlantica range over a period of 36 years. This significant reduction in a relatively short time is a consequence of the strong anthropogenic pressure, mostly illegal logging and branch cutting (El Wahidi 2004;Arjouni et al 2011). In 1998, Griffiths (1998) estimated that 84% of cypress trees were damaged by humans in several stands in the Oued N'Fiss, which was also confirmed in a more recent survey (Sękiewicz et al 2014) (Fig.…”

“…α-Phellandrene (α-PHE), a cyclic monoterpene, is a natural compound that can occur in two enantiomeric forms: (−)-α-PHE and (+)-α-PHE. α-PHE is present in the volatile oil of several plants and in varied concentrations [ 146 ], such as Anethum graveolens (32%) [ 147 ], Solanum erianthum (17.5%) [ 148 ], Schinus terebinthifolius (15.7%) [ 149 ], Curcuma zedoaria (14.9%) [ 150 ], Thymus kotschyanus (10.8%) [ 151 ] and Cupressus atlantica (5.5%) [ 152 ]. Furthermore, this constituent has been associated with the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties of some species, including Matricaria chamomilla [ 153 ], Schinus polygamus [ 154 ] and Zingiber officinale [ 155 ].…”
