Chemical Composition and Biological Activity of the Essential Oils of Senecio aegyptius var. discoideus Boiss.

Abstract: The essential oil of Senecio aegyptius var. discoideus flowers, leaves, stems and roots were isolated by hydrodistillation. Analysis of the oils by capillary GLC and GLC-mass spectrometry were performed and 34 out of 37 compounds were identified. The main component was isolated and characterized as 1,10-epoxyfuranoeremophilane using a combination of GLC, GLC-MS, and NMR analyses. The oils of flowers, leaves and stems were rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons while the root oil mainly contains furanoeremophilanes. … Show more

“…There are many reports about antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of plants (Sagdic, 2003;Sagdic et al, 2006). Recent studies indicated that several species of Senecio exhibit antimicrobial, antifungal and cytotoxic activities (Barbetti et al, 1986;Pérez et al, 1999;Kiprono et al, 2000;El-Shazly et al, 2002;Garcia et al, 2003;Loizzo et al, 2004Loizzo et al, , 2006.…”

“…Senecio species were used in folk medicine in the treatment of wounds and as antiemetic, anti-inflammatory and vasodilator preparations (Rose, 1972;Bautista Peris et al, 1991). Recent studies indicated antibacterial and antifungal activities of compounds from Senecio species (Pérez et al, 1999;Kiprono et al, 2000;El-Shazly et al, 2002).…”

“…Identifi cation of the compounds was based on their mass spectra, retention indices, and comparison with published data (Adams, 2007;El-Shazly and Hussein, 2004;El-Shazly et al, 2002. On the other hand, we could not fi nd any traces of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, β-caryophyllene, and 6-demethoxy-ageratochrome which have been reported as major compounds in the essential oil of leaves from G. parvifl ora growing in Colombia (Pino et al, 2010).…”
