Chemical Constituents from the Whole Plant of Gaultheria itoanaHayata

Abstract: Two new diterpenoids, 14,18-dihydroxyabieta-8,11,13-trien-7-one (1) and 13-acetyl-14,18-dihydroxy-podocarpa-8,11,13-triene (2), together with eight known compounds, i.e., gaultheric acid (3), vanillic acid (4), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (5), cinnamic acid (6), stearic acid (7), palmitic acid (8), beta-sitosterol (9), and stigmasterol (10), were isolated from the MeOH extract of the whole plant of Gaultheria itoana Hayata (Ericaceae). The structures of the new constituents were elucidated by spectroscopic methods (… Show more

“…1). By comparison of their physical and spectroscopic data with those of literatures, the structures of four known abietanes were identified as 5,8,11,13-abietatetraen-3,7-dione [7], 3β,7α-dihydroxy-abieta-8,11,13-triene [13], 14,18-dihydroxyabieta-8,11,13-trien-7-one [14], and 15,18-dihydroxyabieta-8,11,13triene [15], respectively. All the above diterpenes were identified from this mangrove plant for the first time.…”

“…Still, in the plant kingdom, abietadiene-derived diterpenes are not exclusively found in gymnosperms–abietanes (including dehydroabietanes) have been found in different families of angiosperms (e.g. Lamiaceae 36 , Apiaceae 37 and Ericaceae 38 ). Therefore, a better understanding of the distribution of this group of metabolites (or of the genetic potential for their production) in both the bacterial and plant kingdoms will be instrumental for clarifying how their biosynthesis evolved.…”

“…Gaultheric acid belongs to the class of ketones and can be found in wines and plant species such as Gaultheria itoana Hayata (Ericaceae) (Chen et al, 2009). It is also abundant in the root bark of Securidaca longepedunculata Fresen (Polygalaceae), exerting a biocide effect against insects that feed on stored grains (Lognay, Marlier, Seck, & Haubruge, 2000).…”
