Chemical engineering role in the use of renewable energy and alternative carbon sources in chemical production

Abstract: There is a demand for new chemical reaction technologies and associated engineering aspects due to on-going transition in energy and chemistry associated to moving out progressively from the use of fossil fuels. Focus is given in this review on two main aspects: i) the development of alternative carbon sources and ii) the integration of renewable energy in the chemical production. It is shown how addressing properly these aspects requires to develop also a) new tools for chemical engineering assessment and b) … Show more

“…Thus, it guarantees a better transparency of the data, and their usability, but do not addresses the key of the remarks discussed before. They require a step-change in the procedure, and how to integrate in the strategy of development and in general in a novel engineering approach to assess processes based on the use of renewable energy and alternative carbon sources (Centi at al., 2019b). Suitable novel indicators for both economics and LCA have also to be developed.…”

“…In addition, the synergies created from the system change, for example from the integration between solar-and bio-refineries (Abate et al, 2015b), offer new perspectives. However, these emerge only from a system analysis rather than from a classical techno-economic assessment (Centi et al, 2019b).…”

“…This presents many challenges from an energy systems point of view, as these different sources must be integrated on a regional, national and even global scale to ensure a continuous, reliable energy supply. Further to this, in the shorter term the challenge is to slowly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by integrating renewable sources of energy into existing systems and processes [4].…”
