Chemical Synthesis, Characterization, and Properties of Multi‐Element Nanoparticles

Abstract: Multi-element nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of five or more elements have been increasingly studied in the past five years. Their emergence is taking materials science one step further because they exhibit superior properties to those of conventional NPs in a range of respects, including catalysis. This Review focuses on the recent progress in multielement NPs regarding synthesis, especially with regard to chemical synthesis, characterization, and properties. We begin with a brief introduction of multi-elemen… Show more

“…Compared with single-element metal materials, multi-element alloys have attracted attention in recent years because of their mechanical, physical, and chemical properties resulting from the entropy increase (19)(20)(21). The properties of alloy catalysts can be modified by additional elements, similar to how soluble metal complex catalysts can be modified by tuning ligands to modify active sites and their interaction with solvents (22)(23)(24).…”

“…The development of functional materials is an important key to solving various problems in human society. Functional materials have been created together with developments of well-established science such as organic chemistry [4][5][6], inorganic chemistry [7][8][9], polymer chemistry [10][11][12], supramolecular chemistry [13][14][15], coordination chemistry [16][17][18], other materials chemistry [19][20][21], and bio-related chemistry [22][23][24]. Accordingly, it has become clear that precise control of structures is necessary to improve functionality [25,26].…”

“…18 This method has the potential to be an effective general method to synthesize smaller UMEA NPs. However, most MEA NPs synthesized by chemical reduction methods are composed of elements with high and similar redox potentials, such as platinum group metals (PGMs), 19,20 and UMEA NPs with more than 10 elements have not yet been reported. This is mainly because of the largely different redox potentials of multiple elements.…”
