“…m 5 U is a common modification in the tRNAs of bacteria and eukaryotes, and its formation is catalyzed by TrmA in E. coli. A recent high-throughput sequencing approach with increased sensitivity led to the identification of m 5 U in mRNAs of various mammalian cells and tissues [53]. The measured contents of m 5 U in the mRNAs of various types of human cells and mouse tissues range from 0.001% to 0.0059% (m 5 U/U), comparable to that of m 6 Am and m 3 C in mRNAs of mammals.…”

“…Also, two recent high-throughput sequencing projects examined m 5 U in RNAs from human cells (Carter et al, 2019;Cheng et al, 2020). While the vast majority of m 5 U marks were detected in tRNAs, several mRNAs and lncRNAs also contained m 5 U marks (Carter et al, 2019;Cheng et al, 2020). Importantly, several RNAs were bound to TRMT2A, but did not contain methylated uridines, suggesting that TRMT2A has additional biological roles that remain currently unknown (Carter et al, 2019).…”
