Abstract

structure structure (solids and liquids) D 2000 -003Crystal Structure and Properties of Some Filled and Unfilled Skutterudites: GdFe 4 P 12 , SmFe 4 P 12 , NdFe 4 As 12 , Eu 0.54 Co 4 Sb 12 , Fe 0.5 Ni 0.5 P 3 , CoP 3 , and NiP 3 .-The new compound Fe 0.5 Ni 0.5 P 3 as well as the isotypic known compounds CoP 3 and NiP 3 are synthesized by reaction of the elements in a tin flux (evacuated silica tube; 1. 450 • C, 1 d; 2. 675 • C. 7 d). These compounds crystallize in the cubic skutterudite (CoAs 3 ) type structure, space group Im3, Z = 8 (single crystal XRD). The compounds GdFe 4 P 12 , SmFe 4 P 12 , NdFe 4 As 12 , and Eu 0.54 Co 4 Sb 12 have a filled skutterudite (LaFe 4 P 12 ) type structure (space group Im3, Z = 2).
