Abstract

High-Temperature Crystal Structure and Transport Properties of the Layered Cuprates Ln2CuO4, Ln: Pr, Nd and Sm. -The thermal expansion, high-temperature electrical conductivity, and high-temperature crystal structure of the title cuprates with tetragonal T'-structure are investigated in order to evaluate their possible use as cathode materials in solid oxide fuel cells. The compounds show substantial anisotropy of the thermal expansion which strongly depends on the rare-earth cation. The high-temperature electrical conductivity of the cuprates increases from Sm to Pr. The title compounds have advantages over other layered cuprates due to lower thermal expansion coefficients, but only the conductivity of Pr2CuO4 is high enough for applications as cathode in solid oxide fuel cells. At the same time Pr2CuO4 has a small value of the oxygen trace diffusion coefficient so that the use as cathode in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells appears to be limited. -(ISTOMIN*, S.
