Abstract

1998 electric properties, superconductors, semiconductors electric properties, superconductors, semiconductors D 8000 -008Magnetic Properties and Structural Chemistry of the Solid Solution La 5 B 2 C 6 -Gd 5 B 2 C 6 . -The borocarbides (La 1−x Gdx) 5 B 2 C 6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) are prepared by arc melting from the elements and all show structure types isostructural to Ce 5 B 2 C 6 determined by powder XRD. La 5 B 2 C 6 is a type I superconductor with T ¡ 6.9 K but superconductivity is easily destroyed either by applying low external fields or by replacing La by paramagnetic Gd. Within the solid solution the ordering temperature decreases gradually with increasing x.
