Abstract

Synthesis and Isolation of Nitro-β-carbolines Obtained by Nitration of Commercial β-Carboline Alkaloids.-The full details of various attempts for nitration of β-carboline alkaloids are reported together with a complete characterization of the nitro-β-carbolines obtained. Advantages and disadvantages of the nitration reagents under acidic and neutral conditions are discussed. The work-up of the reactions involving CAN, cf. (VII)→(VIII)+(IX), is improved by means of eliminating excess cerium in the mixture, thus avoiding formation of β-carboline-Ce complexes. Preliminary results of studies with respect to the potential use of nitro-carbolines as matrices in the matrix-assisted ultraviolet-laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry are quite good. -(PONCE, MARIA A.; ERRA-BALSELLS, ROSA; J.
