Operando reconstruction of solid catalyst into a distinct active state frequently occurs during electrocatalytic processes. The correlation between initial and operando states, if ever existing, is critical for the understanding and precise design of a catalytic system. Inspired by recently established intermediate metallic state of Bi-based catalysts during electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR), here we investigate a series of Bi oxide catalysts (Bi, Bi2O3, BiO2) and demonstrate that the operando surface/subsurface oxygen loading, positively correlated to the initial oxygen content, plays a critical role in determining Bi-based CO2RR performance. Higher initial oxygen loading indicates a better electrocatalytic efficiency. Further analysis shows that this conclusion generally applies to all Bi-based electrocatalysts reported up to date. Following this principle, cost-effective BiO2 nanocrystals demonstrated the highest formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) and current density compared to Bi/Bi2O3, further allowing a pair-electrolysis system with 800 mA/cm2 current density and an overall 175% FE for formate production.

The large-area arrays of one-dimensional (1D) nanowires and nanoflowers of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) were synthesized by the oxidative metal vapour phase deposition technique with controlled flow of oxygen and constant working pressures. Surface morphology analysis showed that the as-synthesized product at 10 Torr consisted of 1D nanowires with diameters about 13–42 nm and lengths up to several tens of micrometres. The other working pressure of 30 Torr accounted for the formation of nanoflowers with a petal-like structure. Elemental analysis confirms the presence of only the elements Bi and O. The crystalline nature of the 1D nanostructure is revealed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) studies. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicates the formation of a two-phase system with monoclinic α-Bi2O3 and tetragonal β-Bi2O3. Raman signals of the synthesized nanostructures are identified and assigned to various phonon vibration modes of Bi and Bi2O3. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum shows a visible broadband emission in the wavelength range, 500–800 nm.

A unique nanodisc heterostructure is achieved at room temperature without any additional organic surfactants. By using bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) precursor itself as templates, bismuth oxide hydrates BiO1.8•0.04H2O (BiO1.84H0.08) ultrathin nanosheets are generated to be stacked around the original BiOCl nanodiscs, while the major composition of the inner part remains the precursor itself. Notably, the obtained nanodisc heterostructures well duplicate the size and overall discal shape of the precursor. The structural and crystalline matching of two phases is favour for the morphological construction, further facilitating the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carries. Significantly, the BiOCl/BiO1.84H0.08 heterostructures exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity in bacterial inactivation under visible light irradiation, which is mainly due to the directly oxidation of photoexcited hole (h+). Accordingly, a h+ transfer process between two phases is proposed. This work will inspire the exploration of a facile way to construct unique heterostructures with diverse photocatalytic applications.
