ChemInform Abstract: Two Non‐Isostructural Gadolinium Oxide Nitride Chalcogenides: Gd₃ONSe₂ and Gd₃ONTe₂.

Abstract

Two Non-Isostructural Gadolinium Oxide Nitride Chalcogenides: Gd 3ONSe2 and Gd 3ONTe2. -Gd3ONSe2 (I) and Gd3ONTe2 (II) are prepared by the reaction of Gd with Gd 2O3, NaN3, Se or Te, I2, and NaI as flux (evacuated silica tubes, 850-950 C, 7 d). Yellow lath-shaped single crystals of (I) crystallize isotypically to Tb3ONSe2 in the monoclinic space group C2/m (Z = 4) while (II) forms black rods crystallizing in the space group Pnma (Z = 4) with the crystal structure of Nd 3N2SeBr. Three crystallographically independent Gd 3+ cations are found in both compounds, but with different coordination spheres. The main structural features are  1 {[ONGd3] 4+ } double chains containing edge-connected [NGd 4] and [OGd4] tetrahedra running along [010] in both compounds. A porous arrangement, which is obtained by a different linkage pattern of the light-anion centered (Gd 3+ )4 tetrahedra can be detected in (I), whereas the denser form of connectivity is seen in (II). -(FOLTIN, M.
