Childhood cancer incidence in Suriname (South-America) was estimated using secondary data from 1980 to 2008, and these findings were stratified according to gender; age groups < 1, 1-4, 5-14, and 15-19 years; and the largest ethnic groups (Hindustanis, Maroons, Creoles, and Javanese). Data were expressed as total numbers, proportions, average yearly numbers, and/or crude incidence rates per 1,000,000 population per year. There were 290 malignancies in the period covered, i.e., about 10 new cases per year or 24 per 1,000,000 per year. The average yearly number of overall cancer increased from approximately 1 every two years in newborns to 3-4 per year in adolescents and young adults. Thirty to 35% of patients were Hindustani or Creole; the proportions of Javanese and Maroons patients were about twice and five times, respectively, lower. Leukemias and lymphomas comprised almost half of cases, each occurring 2 to 3 times per year. Bone tumors, soft-tissue sarcomas, and carcinomas were the most common non-hematological malignancies, occurring once or twice per year. Central nervous system tumors, neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma, renal tumors, primary hepatic tumors, and germ cell tumors were exceedingly rare. In conclusion, childhood cancer incidence in Suriname was relatively low; the individual histiotypes displayed an unusual ranking; and there were differences in the sex, age, and ethnic distribution of overall cancer as well as certain histiotypes. However, these observations might be biased by the use of crude rates, and underdiagnosis and incomplete registration of cases due to the absence of specialized (pediatric) cancer facilities in the country.

Aim:The aim of the study was to explore the growth inhibitory effect of myricanol 5-fluorobenzyloxy ether (5FEM) and the underlying mechanism in human leukemic cells HL-60. Materials & methods: 5FEM was obtained by chemical modification of myricanol with fluorobenzyloxy ether at the OH(5) position. The cytotoxicity, cell apoptosis, cell cycle and the expression of key apoptosis-related genes in HL-60 were evaluated. Results & conclusion: 5FEM can significantly inhibited growth of HL-60 cells, increased the G2/M population and upregulated the expression of Bax, Fas, FasL, caspase-9 and p21 and downregulated that of Bcl-2 and survivin. The results enhance our understanding of 5FEM and aid the discovery of novel myricanol derivatives as potential antitumor agents. The incidence and mortality of cancer have been increasing in China [1]. About 4,292,000 new cases of cancer and 2,814,000 cancer-related deaths were estimated in China in 2015 [2]. Combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and bone marrow transplant are involved in treatment of leukemia [6]. But these treatments have limitations because of a high probability of relapse and toxicity. Traditional Chinese medicine and natural plants have been used in the treatment of cancer for thousands of years in China. Owing to its minor side effects and good curative efficacy, the screening of anticancer drugs from traditional Chinese herbal medicine has increased considerably over the past few years [7,8].Myrica rubra (Lour.) Sieb. Et Zucc., a myricaceae Myrica plant, found in China and other Asian countries. Because of its biological properties, the bark of M. rubra is used in Chinese folk medicine [9][10][11]. Myricanol is a cyclic diarylheptanoid isolated from the bark of M. rubra. Diarylheptanoids exhibit various biological activities, including antitumor [12], antiviral [13], antioxidant [14] and anti-inflammatory [15] owing to its unique chemical structure. Our previous studies have shown that myricanol significantly inhibits the proliferation of human lung adenocarcinoma (A549), hepatoma (HepG2) and human promyelocytic leukemia (HL-60) cells. Further, it increased the caspase-3, caspase-9, Bax and p21 expression and decreased the expressions of Bcl-2 at the mRNA and protein levels [16]. Myricanol significantly induced tumor growth inhibitory effects on the xenografts of lung adenocarcinoma A549 by upregulating the expression of Bax and downregulating that of survivin, Bcl-2, VEGF and HIF-1α. Latar belakang. Angka remisi pascakemoterapi LLA masih belum memuaskan, banyak faktor yang memengaruhi belum optimalnya luaran terapi LLA, salah satunya adalah faktor subtipe sel limfosit LLA. Tujuan. Melihat hubungan subtipe sel limfosit dengan tingkat remisi pascakemoterapi fase induksi LLA. Metode. Penelitian kohort prospektif dilakukan di RS dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung dari bulan Februari-September 2016. Subyek adalah anak <14 tahun yang baru didiagnosis LLA berdasarkan hasil aspirasi sumsum tulang. Diambil sampel darah perifer untuk dilakukan pemeriksaan immunophenotyping agar dapat diketahui subtipe sel limfositnya, dilakukan kemoterapi fase induksi selama 6 minggu berdasarkan protokol terapi. Dilakukan aspirasi sumsum tulang evaluasi untuk melihat tingkat remisinya. Analisis statistik dilakukan dengan uji Fisher-exact. Hasil. Terdapat 40 subjek yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi dan menjalani kemoterapi fase induksi. Dari 40 subjek, 26 menyelesaikan kemoterapi fase induksi, dan dari 26 subjek yang dilakukan evaluasi aspirasi sumsum tulang, 20/26 mengalami remisi lengkap dan 6/26 tidak remisi. Terdapat 18/24 subjek sel B-LLA yang mengalami remisi lengkap dan 6/24 tidak remisi, sedangkan penderita sel T-LLA yang mengalami remisi lengkap 2/2 subjek. Tidak terdapat perbedaan yang bermakna antara subtipe sel limfosit dengan tingkat remisi pascakemoterapi fase induksi (p=0,585). Kesimpulan. Subtipe sel limfosit tidak berpengaruh terhadap tingkat remisi pascakemoterapi fase induksi. This prospective cohort study was done in the in-patient ward of Child Heakth Department, Hasan Sadikin Hospital during February-September 2016. The subject were <14 years old children, newly diagnosed as ALL children according to the bone marrow aspiration. Peripheral blood sample were taken for immunophenotyping examination for lymphocyte cell subtype. Based on the therapy protocol, induction phase chemotherapy was done for 6 weeks, and afterwards bone marrow aspiration was done again to find out the remission grade. Statistical analysis using Fisher-exact test.Results. There were 40 subjects who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and had the induction phase chemotherapy.
