China’s Land-Use Changes during the Past 300 Years: A Historical Perspective

Abstract: Understanding the processes of historical land-use change is crucial to the research of global environmental sustainability. Here we examine and attempt to disentangle the evolutionary interactions between land-use change and its underlying causes through a historical lens. We compiled and synthesized historical land-use change and various biophysical, political, socioeconomic, and technical datasets, from the Qing dynasty to modern China. The analysis reveals a clear transition period between the 1950s and th… Show more

“…During the past 300 years (1700-2010), China experienced the highest increased in cropland. Due to population growth, the cropland was increased in the cost of forest land before 1980s, however, after 1980s land use dynamics exhibited by agricultural intensification and rapid industrialization in the country [64,65]. In Nepal, about two-thirds of the total population rely on agriculture for their livelihoods and subsistence [66].…”

“…As the third largest and most populated country, China has a long history of agricultural civilization and its land use has undergone great changes owing to significant transformation caused by human activities, natural factors and their impact on the climate and environment 38 39 , which plays a significant role in the global LUCC pattern 40 . Over the last century, northeastern China has experienced large-scale population reflux of Chuang Guandong migration and major land reclamation process influenced by lifting the ban on the Qing Government’s prohibition policy 41 42 43 .…”

“…Their key finding was that land cover transition primarily occurred after 1995 and included massive forest loss coupled with mixed small scale agriculture. It is therefore necessary to systematically and scientifically assess this water tower under the influence of land cover change and population growth in order to provide substantial information for future decision-making [38], as this enhances establishment of effective conservation and management strategies [5,39], for human welfare [40].…”
