Abstract: Abstract. An introduction to the basic ideas and methods of Chiral Perturbation Theory is presented. Several phenomenological applications of the effective Lagrangian technique to strong, electromagnetic and weak interactions are discussed.

“…The Goldstone nature of the pseudoscalar bosons implies strong constraints on their interactions, which can be most easily analyzed on the basis of an effective Lagrangian organized as an expansion in powers of momenta (derivatives) and quark masses over the chiral symmetry breaking scale Λ χ ≃ 4πF π ≃ 1.2 GeV. The resulting Goldstone effective field theory, Chiral Perturbation Theory (χPT) [3][4][5], has achieved a remarkable success describing the low-energy dynamics of QCD [6,7].…”

“…It is generally believed [4,1,2] that the charm quark plays an important role in the ∆I = 1/2 rule, observed in non-leptonic weak kaon decays, K → ππ. The purpose of this short note has been to investigate one aspect of this role.…”

“…Chiral symmetry and its breaking pattern, in combination with the concept of effective field theory first systematically put forward by Weinberg [2] , has led to a low-energy effective theory of QCD-Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] . It has long been realized that ChPT may be employed to study SU (3) breaking effects on the MMs of the baryon octet.…”
