Chitin Nanofibril Application in Tympanic Membrane Scaffolds to Modulate Inflammatory and Immune Response

Abstract: Chitin nanofibrils (CNs) are an emerging bio-based nanomaterial. Due to nanometric size and high crystallinity, CNs lose the allergenic features of chitin and interestingly acquire anti-inflammatory activity. Here we investigate the possible advantageous use of CNs in tympanic membrane (TM) scaffolds, as they are usually implanted inside highly inflamed tissue environment due to underlying infectious pathologies. In this study, the applications of CNs in TM scaffolds were twofold. A nanocomposite was used, con… Show more

“…All these findings are suggestive for promising applications in the personal care sector, because of the good compatibility of the CNs with the skin [76,77]. Recent studies are also considering CNs coatings and nanocomposites for some biomedical applications, such as eardrum repair [78].…”

“…When discussing CN, due to the intriguing, unique properties of CN and lignin, CN-LG NPs have been developed to be used as functional carriers of active substances for the regeneration of human tissues [299][300][301]. Significant efforts have been made to create non-woven tissues that replicate the behavior of the skin for this purpose.…”

“…Significant efforts have been made to create non-woven tissues that replicate the behavior of the skin for this purpose. Numerous investigations have demonstrated that CNs do not form when the crystals have high crystallinity and submicrometric size [299][300][301]. CNs can cause chitin's allergic characteristics and inflammatory activity.…”

“…While ES is adjusted to obtain optimized structural and morphological materials to accomplish the requirements, the component selection also plays a crucial role. Many synthetic (PEG, PCL [ 12 , 13 ], PEO [ 14 ], and PVA) and natural polymers (cellulose [ 15 ], chitin [ 16 ], and collagen) have been used. From these materials, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is an excellent option as supporting media for wound dressings, due to it is biodegradable, non-toxic, and good fiber formation capacity that results in mats with optimal flexibility.…”
