Chitosan-based Polymer Matrix for Pharmaceutical Excipients and Drug Delivery

Abstract: The development of innovative drug delivery systems, versatile to different drug characteristics with better effectiveness and safety, has always been in high demand. Chitosan, an aminopolysaccharide, derived from natural chitin biomass, has received much attention as one of the emerging pharmaceutical excipients and drug delivery entities. Chitosan and its derivatives can be used for direct compression tablets, as disintegrant for controlled release or for improving dissolution. Chitosan has been reported for… Show more

“…Moreover, no statistical similarity was demonstrated between the profiles both at pH 1.2 and 6.8. Chitosan and its derivatives are widely described as a good vehicle for enhancing the solubility and dissolution of poorly water-soluble drugs [ 3 , 41 , 42 , 43 ]. Chitosan dissolves readily in most of the acid solutions.…”

“…Notulae Botanicae Horti Cluj-Napoca Agrobotanici 2 Chitosan is extracted from chitin found in the exoskeleton of crustaceans (Fournier et al, 2020), fungal cell wall (Chang et al, 2019), insect cuticle (Luo et al, 2019), among others. Chitosan has been used in waste water treatment (Uragami et al, 2015), cosmetology (Aranaz et al, 2018), medicine (Ahsan et al, 2018), pharmaceutics (Khan et al, 2019), food and beverage (Rocha et al, 2017), and paper industries (Song et al, 2018), among others.…”
